We are excited to be entering our 5th year of partnering with First Generation Investors to expand the reach of Niner Finances into the Community! First Generation Investors (FGI) is a national nonprofit that teaches high school students the basics of investing and personal finance.
As a college volunteer, you’ll empower local students to build wealth and confidence for their future — while also strengthening your own leadership and financial skills.
All Majors Welcome: FGI is perfect for students from any discipline!
- Recruitment: UNC Charlotte volunteers for Spring 2026 will be recruited during Fall 2025.
- Schedule: Sessions are held on Fridays from late January through mid-April.
- Student Investment: High school students who complete the program receive $100 to invest in a select set of mutual funds. Upon graduating high school and turning 18, these investments are transferred to their own brokerage accounts.
Each FGI session includes:
- Breaking into small groups to review last week’s lessons.
- Learning a new concept, such as bonds, compounding interest, or mutual funds.
- Reviewing materials for Capstone Projects.
FGI partners with high schools and community organizations that support students. Partner schools commit to an 8-10 session course designed to build a strong foundation in financial literacy.
